CLINICAL REPORT Unilateral Calcification of the Caudate and Putamen: Association with Underlying Developmental Venous Anomaly

S. Dehkharghani W.P. Dillon S.O. Bryant N.J. Fischbein SUMMARY: Stenosis of a DVA may result in chronic venous ischemia. We present 6 patients (3 men, 3 women; age range, 30–79 years; mean age, 53 years) with unilateral calcification of the caudate and putamen on noncontrast CT. This calcification typically spared the anterior limb of the internal capsule. No patient presented with symptoms referable to the basal ganglia or had an underlying metabolic disorder or other process associated with calcium deposition. All patients subsequently underwent gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging and/or CTA or conventional angiography demonstrating the presence of an adjacent DVA. We hypothesize that chronic venous ischemia in the drainage territory of the DVA causes the abnormal mineralization. Greater recognition of this entity will prevent misinterpretation of this finding as acute hemorrhage and will prevent unnecessary and sometimes invasive evaluation in such patients. Furthermore, this entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unilateral basal ganglia hyperattenuation.

متن کاملDevelopmental Venous Anomaly With Asymmetrical Basal Ganglia Calcification: Two Case Reports and Review of the Literature
Developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is a common lesion formerly known as venous angioma. DVAs drain normal brain parenchyma; however, parenchymal abnormalities surrounding DVAs have been reported. Unilateral putamen and caudate calcification in the drainage territory of DVAs has so far been reported in 7 cases, all with deep venous drainage. We present two additional cases of DVAs, one with supe...
متن کاملTRODAT-1 and Tc-99m ECD observations in hyperglycemia hemichorea
We describe two cases of right hyperglycemia hemichorea (HGHC) with identical Tc-99m TRODAT-1/ Tc-99m ECD scan findings. While the brain MRI showed signal alterations within the left putamen, there was evidence of hyperperfusion on Tc-99m TRODAT-1 but hypoperfusion on Tc-99m ECD within the left putamen, in association with hyperperfusion within left thalamus on Tc-99m ECD. The discrepancy betwe...
متن کاملA Mutation in the Tubulin-Encoding TUBB3 Gene Causes Complex Cortical Malformations and Unilateral Hypohidrosis
Recent studies have emphasized the association between tubulin gene mutations and developmental abnormalities of the cortex. In this study, the authors identified a mutation in the tubulin-encoding class III β-tubulin (TUBB3) gene in a 4-year-old boy presenting with brain abnormalities and unilateral hypohidrosis. The patient showed a left internal strabismus, moderate developmental delay, and ...
متن کاملIncreased Prevalence of Developmental Venous Anomalies in Children with Intracranial Neoplasms.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Developmental venous anomalies are considered variants of venous development that, in and of themselves, are of little clinical import. A possible association between intrinsic brain tumors and developmental venous anomalies has been suggested, but a rigorous investigation has not been performed. The aim of this study was to assess any association between developmental ve...
